Much prefer the 2nd thanks to kingdom building aspect which really pulled me in. Plus the combat was better. But to each their own. I enjoyed the beginning because it's like a little interactive Ghibli movie.
Then the main game began and turns out it's another "collect all the monsters" jrpg. I still finished it anyway. I would firmly disagree the combat is awful and its really grindy I enjoyed it for awhile and then got so bored of the combat and mechanics I put it down and haven't come back.
